The year in review · 2023

Seventy-seven programmes, fifty volunteers.

The year the Club stopped reading its activities aloud at the AGM — there were simply too many — and switched to showing them. It also won the Yale Alumni Association's Excellence Award for a fifth consecutive year.

The year

A fifth consecutive Excellence Award
Cited for the Club's large number of officers and volunteers, and the diversity of programmes they make possible.
A club that answers when called
When students were trapped at CUHK during the protests, a call for housing went out and was answered within the hour. The same instinct turns up in smaller ways all year.
The Ivy Ball returns
Held for the first time in at least three years, with the largest Yale attendance on record — five tables — and alumni singers and a violinist performing.
Speakers
Gregory May, the U.S. Consul General; Joan O'Neill, Yale's Vice President for Alumni Affairs; Nelson Cunningham on U.S.–China relations; Henny Sender and Anthony Neoh on the capital markets; James A. Fok on the financial cold war; and Taisu Zhang on Qing taxation.
Virtuoso Fiesta
An ensemble formed after two members met at a Lunch Club lunch, and went on to play at the Fringe Club and the Conrad. The Chamber Music Society also performed at a hospice.
The new admits reception
Alumni musicians performed for Hong Kong students admitted to Yale. Every admit who attended accepted Yale's offer.
Service in the rain
The annual Lantau tree planting went ahead in a downpour, and Impact HK kindness walks continued through the year.
